Our history:
Pastor Nick Gillaspie and his family came to Springfield, Oregon in May of
2003. After serving in the Sailor Ministry of First Baptist Church of
Hammond, Indiana, under director Bob Hooker for six years, he felt God's
leading to return home to Oregon to start the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Stepping out on faith, Pastor trusted God to establish a dynamic new church
in Springfield. He resigned the Sailor Ministry, sold his home, and was
moving to Lane County within five months of that decision. There were no
people, no buildings, and no salary... just a heart of faith and the call of
God.
While waiting to start the new church, Pastor held a secular job in Oregon
for about eight months. Finding a building to meet in was difficult in
Springfield. After many weeks of looking, God opened the door for our
church to meet in the American Legion Hall.
After weeks of prayerful preparation and personal visitation throughout the
community, opening day arrived! On May 16th, 2004, we enjoyed our Grand
Opening Service. On that Sunday, 93 people attended and many people decided
to make this new church their "church home." This marked the beginning of
God's blessings on this brand new church. Just one year later, at our One
Year Anniversary Service on May 15th, 2005, we had 156 people in
attendance. Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church officially chartered that day at 2PM.
Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church is so named for three reasons:
1. Mt. Pisgah is the mountain from which God allowed Moses
to see the Promised Land before he died as told in Deuteronomy 3:27-29.
2. Secondly, Mt. Pisgah is a hill just south of Springfield
named for the one in the Bible because of the great view.
3. Finally, Mt. Pisgah is mentioned in the third verse of a
favorite hymn, "Sweet Hour of Prayer: "Till, from Mount Pisgah's lofty
height, I view my home and take my flight: This robe of flesh I'll drop, and
rise To seize the everlasting prize. And shout while passing through the
air, Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer."
This is just the beginning of the history of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. We
pray there will be volumes to be told of people coming to Christ for
salvation and seeing their lives changed for the good. We hope that you will
find a friendly, encouraging atmosphere here at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Our Bible gives us our vision, our vision outlines our ministry, and our
ministry is people. You are important at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Philippians 2:16 - "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath
begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ". .
